Ursula von der Leyen soliviantó a la UE hace casi un año, cuando tras los atentados de Hamás del 7 de octubre y la posterior respuesta de Israel, se alineó con el Gobierno de Benjamín Netanyahu, pese a que empezaba a masacrar indiscriminadamente a la población civil en Gaza. Los estados miembros y el alto representante, Josep Borrell, en quienes recaen la política exterior de la UE, apercibieron su conducta y obligaron a la alemana a seguir la línea marcada por las capitales. Ahora, una vez reelegida, la presidenta de la Comisión Europea ha vuelto a ir por libre y a limitar su condena a los ataques que ha recibido Israel por parte de Irán ignorando la invasión terrestre del Líbano.
“Condeno enérgicamente el ataque con misiles balísticos lanzado ayer por Irán contra Israel. Tales acciones amenazan la estabilidad regional y aumentan las tensiones en una situación ya de por sí extremadamente volátil. Insto a todas las partes a proteger la vida de los civiles inocentes”, ha afirmado en un comunicado oficial remitido a los medios de comunicación y notificado también a través de redes sociales. Von der Leyen mantuvo el silencio respecto al conflicto en Oriente Medio toda la jornada anterior, cuando se produjo la ofensiva terrestre en el sur de Líbano. Sí tuvo espacio en sus comunicaciones para dar la bienvenida a Mark Rutte por asumir formalmente la secretaría general de la OTAN o felicitar al primer ministro de Japón por su elección.
“La Unión Europea sigue pidiendo un alto el fuego en la frontera con Líbano y en Gaza, así como la liberación de todos los rehenes retenidos desde hace casi un año”, agrega el comunicado de Von der Leyen, que de nuevo no hace ninguna mención a la necesidad de cumplir con el derecho internacional y humanitario en el conflicto. La presidenta del gobierno comunitario tampoco dijo nada sobre el ataque a través de ‘walkie-talkies’ dirigido a Hizbulá que provocó decenas de muertos y centenares de heridos.
En términos generales la condena ha sido mucho más unánime por el ataque de Irán que por las acciones perpetradas por Israel si bien es cierto que Borrell convocó de urgencia a los ministros de Exteriores de la UE ante el recrudecimiento de la situación y la amenaza de Benjamín Netanyahu sobre la invasión de Líbano. De aquella reunión no fue posible que saliera una declaración conjunta por el veto de República Checa, que se negó por la advertencia contra esa ofensiva terrestre.
“Agravaría dramáticamente la situación”, señalaba el texto, que finalmente se emitió únicamente en nombre del alto representante. “Insto a que se respete el derecho internacional humanitario en todas las circunstancias. Las armas deben silenciarse ahora y la voz de la diplomacia debe hablar y ser oída por todos”, señaló Borrell en una comparecencia tras el encuentro con los ministros.
Tras el ataque de Irán, el jefe de la diplomacia europea emitió un nuevo comunicado en el que lo condenaba “en los términos más enérgicos” y hacía un llamamiento a la contención “de todas las partes”. “El peligroso ciclo de ataques y represalias corre el riesgo de descontrolarse”, alertaba, además, Borrell en un momento en el que Estados Unidos estaba analizando la respuesta con Irán y le advertía de “graves consecuencias”. Esas apelaciones a la contención y a evitar la escalada tampoco aparecen en el discurso de Von der Leyen.
